Research Engineer (PhD Student) – Optical Measurement Techniques

Job description

The work focuses on the detailed investigation of flow, mixture preparation, injection, ignition, combustion, pollutant formation, knocking and pre-ignition in large engines. These processes are investigated by fundamental investigations on single-cylinder research engines as well as on special test rigs with the aid of sophisticated measurement technology, including optical technology. The aim of the investigations is to analyze and understand these processes in order to provide data for the modeling and improvement of combustion systems.

Major responsibilities

  • Setup fundamental experiments on various test rigs which make it possible to measure combustion-relevant processes at defined conditions.
  • Plan and execute the tests, select suitable measurement techniques to ensure the best possible performance as a basis for the development of simulation models.
  • Analyze the results to gain a deeper understanding of the influence and interactions of different boundary conditions on the relevant phenomena.
  • Develop and improve measurement concepts and measurement techniques
  • Validate the measurements and make the results usable for numerical analyses, simulation and model development
  • Communicate the measurement results in regular internal meetings and to project partners
  • Disseminate the project results in the form of scientific publications and elaborate a PhD thesis

Your profile

  • Qualified degree (MSc, Dipl.-Ing) in Physics or comparable
  • Strong interpersonal skills with initiative and perseverance
  • English fluent, German would be an asset

Research Engineer (PhD-Student) – Integrated Sensor System for Sliding Bearings

The work focuses on the development and enhancement of a new generation of sliding bearings with an integrated sensor system. With this measurement system, the target is to obtain a deeper understanding of bearing and lubricant behavior in internal combustion engines. Furthermore, the gained knowledge will be applied to contribute to the development of strategies towards condition monitoring (CM), condition-based maintenance (CBM) and smart controls with regard to the bearing system and the overall engine.

Major responsibilities

  • Prepare experimental setups (bearing test rig, single cylinder research engine) that make it possible to investigate relevant processes in the bearing system at defined conditions
  • Plan and execute the tests with a suitable methodology to ensure the best possible output
  • Analyze the results to gain a deeper understanding of the influence and interactions of different boundary conditions on bearing and lubricant behavior
  • Develop and improve measurement concepts and measurement techniques
  • Integrate and test an engine condition monitoring system

Research Engineer (Ph.D. Student) – Advanced Methane Exhaust Aftertreatment for Large Gas Engines

We are looking for a motivated and innovative research engineer to investigate and develop advanced exhaust aftertreatment solutions for large gas engines to comply with methane emission standards in the long term. The goal is to minimize methane emissions from these engines in all operating modes with pre-turbocharger catalyst technology. You will perform experimental investigations on a single cylinder research engine to evaluate advanced catalysts, examine catalyst aging and poisoning effects and develop catalyst reactivation strategies. Furthermore, you will apply simulation tools to optimize engine system layouts and operating strategies to find the most suitable system solution with regard to efficiency and emissions.

Major responsibilities

  • Modify an existing catalyst test system to investigate catalysts on a single cylinder research engine
  • Plan, prepare and execute experimental tests on a single cylinder research engine
  • Investigate and evaluate new and aged methane catalysts under different conditions, catalyst aging effects and poisoning effects and reactivation strategies
  • Create a knowledge base of the possibilities and limits of methane conversion with advanced after-treatment technology
  • Develop and apply 1D simulation tools to optimize the overall engine system layout and operating strategies in steady state and transient modes (e.g., cold start, emergency stop)
  • Analyze the results of simulation and experimental testing and deduce the most suitable system solution

  • Investigate and evaluate the latest SCR catalyst technologies, engine operating strategies and reducing agent supply strategies

Research Engineer – Large engine performance concepts

We are looking for an experienced engineer to work on performance concepts. Together with one of our partners, you will define the steady state and transient performance of a new gas engine focusing on conceptual work and simulation.

Major responsibilities

  • Engineering work for a gas engine development project focusing on performance (power, efficiency, emissions, costs, transient behavior etc.) and operating strategies
  • Definition, coordination and execution of gas engine development activities concerning mixture preparation, gas exchange, combustion, turbocharging etc. like conceptual studies, assessment of various design options, concept down-select etc.
  • Definition, coordination and execution of corresponding 1D simulations and SCE test data evaluations
  • Close cooperation with various functions of the engine manufacturer like performance, controls, design, mechanical engineering, systems etc.
  • Strong support of the engine manufacturer development process e.g. preparation of reviews, documentation etc.

Your profile

  • Master of science in mechanical engineering or comparable
  • Experience in thermodynamics and combustion engine development
